My own background includes having attended a Conservative
synagogue's Hebrew School and being raised in a Kosher home,
but I only felt that I had a "surface" of Judaic
knowledge. Melton's course has enabled me to learn so much
more, while also coming to understand how I can (and do) incorporate
what I have learned into my life every day. At times it has
also motivated me to do some additional readings on my own.
Yes, there are those who come to the class with more knowledge,
and, yes, there are times when they could monopolize the discussions.
BUT, they do not. And this is in large part due to the skills
of the teachers. There are also those who have come to the
class with less knowledge than I. And, the varying backgrounds
-- Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and a few Jews by Choice
-- make the experience all the more enriching. Also, as time
has gone on, everyone has become very comfortable with each
other and no one tries to "show up" anyone else.
One wonderful thing is BECAUSE people come to the class with
so many different backgrounds in Judaism, it adds to the learning
experience by enabling everyone to share in the knowledge
of each other. The environment is very nurturing, and no one
is ever made to feel anything but an integral part of a wonderful
learning experience. I am very glad that I signed up for the
course, and am very excited to begin the 2nd year next fall.
An interesting note - my fiance', who is a Reform Jew and
who admits to having a paucity of Jewish knowledge, has been
fascinated by this course. Each week he and I have discussions
based on what I learned in class, and it has truly enhanced
our relationship. He is now planning to sign up for the first
year class that begins next fall on Sunday mornings.
