June 05 Seminar
The
Melton trip provided us with the perfect learning opportunities
at several historical sites. We learned about what happened
right where it happened. An example was our visit to Kumran.
I had heard the name Essenes before but had just the vaguest
notion of who and what they were.
What could be a more vivid way to learn about them then to sit
in the ruins of their dining hall on this hot, desolate mountain
as Haim led us in a role play. We relived the Essenes' monastic
quest for religious purity and their disgust with the corruption
they felt was rampant with Jews in Jerusalem. At the end we,
as visitors had to decide whether we would join this order or
return to Jerusalem. The exercise was a huge success. I not
only learned something about the Essenes, but I am eager to
learn more! Thanks.
