June 06 Israel Seminar
The seminar was more than I could have imagined. The seminar leaders were excellent, the discussions stimulating and the sites made the last two years of study seem alive.
Of course, all the participants contributed to a memorable experience. For me, the most emotional parts of the seminar were the visits to Yad Vashem and Har Herzl.
But the most memorable event was the interview with a resident of Jerusalem. My partner in the exercise, Irene Slavutin, and I were lucky enough to find a man in his yard who, after we made our introductions, welcomed us into his home. He spent over an hour with us, telling us of his childhood in Vienna, how his parents were in a concentration camp and how he emigrated to Israel in 1939. He responded to all the seminar questions and more, sometimes in ways that were quite unexpected. His answers were quite candid and he incorporated several anecdotes into the interview. A true gentleman. I will always remember the interview with David Rubinger.
