Jaynie
Schultz, a Mini-School teacher for six years, begins each class by taking ten
minutes or so to discuss anything Jewish that happened in the lives of the students.
"I never taught adults before Melton, but I discovered that I definitely
prefer teaching adults over children because I can be more direct," says
Jaynie. Former
Dallas Mini-School Director Lisa Brodsky, who brought the Mini-School to Dallas,
describes Jaynie as an exceptional community leader and role model in the Dallas
community. "She has definitely changed student's lives," says Lisa.
"Students sign up for Melton when they learn that Jaynie is teaching." Jaynie
began teaching at the Mini-School because she felt it was the best tool for adult
literacy. "Adult literacy is the key to Jewish literacy in the future,"
says Jaynie. She became involved in adult Jewish education because she wanted
to learn for herself. "I
enjoy watching the students become more confident Jews," she says. Along
with the classic examples of people adding Jewish ritual to their lives, she's
witnessed interfaith couples comprehend why there are certain rituals and decide
to include them in their wedding plans. "Many of my students have decided
to keep their children in Jewish Day School or send them in the first place because
of their increased knowledge." In
addition to her Melton responsibilities, Jaynie is the Director of two family
foundations and considers helping Dallas become a better city in which to live
as her hobby. Janyie
at one time made aliya to Israel where she met her husband, Ron Romaner. Ron owned
a popular restaurant among English speakers named "Cheesecake" and it
was there that they met. "My husband is American-born, but Israeli at heart,"
says Jaynie. They have four children. "Jaynie
takes a leadership roll when helping to organize the other teachers and Melton
events. We are lucky to have her," says Lisa.
