RACHEL WASSERMAN FACULTY ORIENTATION
The first North American Faculty Orientation was held in Northbrook on August 14 and 15th. As the evaluations from the twenty participants testify, this was a very efficient, effective, fun way to “Meltonize” new faculty members.
Just being in the room and exchanging ideas with individuals from across the country, across the Jewish professional world, and across the denominations, conveyed our idea of pluralism. The texts we taught and learned created the intellectual excitement and the passion we all feel for our literary heritage. The discussions and reflections on teaching opened faculty and staff to new ideas in Jewish adult learning. In short, it was great!
Rabbi Michael Balinsky led the orientation aided by Judy Kupchan, Dr. Mitch Parker, and Dr. Betsy Katz. Irene Bennett and Kitty Hoffman made sure that the group was well fed and that the materials reflected the excellence of the entire program.
We are particularly grateful to Norton Wasserman, FMAMS student and Board member for making this all possible. We look forward to next year and hope that even more new faculty will be able to take advantage of this opportunity.
