International Alumni Association Annual Kallah, Jerusalem, May 2008

From May 26 - June 3, 2008, the International Alumni Association of the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School will be gathering in Jerusalem for their Annual Kallah*.

"On Earthly Matters and the Yoke of Heaven: the Haredi World and Modern Israel" is the title of the Kallah. Two central responses to the challenge posed by the modern world to traditional Judaism were the emergence of what we know as the Haredi world, often referred to as "Ultra-Orthodox", and Zionism. Neither existed 120 years ago; both now contend strongly for leadership of Judaism and the Jewish people in the 21st century. In the State of Israel, the clash between these two worldviews is strongest.

Can modern Israel retain and strengthen its democratic and pluralist character? Will this Kultuurkampf lead to a richer Jewish future?

Our Kallah will enable us to examine the growth of Haredi Judaism in Israel and consider its impact on the Jewish State and future.

The Kallah will include lectures and discussions, site visits, text study sessions, film (re)viewing, and social engagement.  In addition, participants will take part in the activities of the annual Board of Governors of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem as it celebrates Israel's 60th anniversary.
