San
Antonio Graduation
On
Thursday, May 24, the San Antonio Florence Melton Adult Mini-School
celebrated its fourth graduation, with eight graduates. Esther
Glahn, director through December of 2004, spoke at the graduation.
"You should all be proud of the significant dedication
and commitment you made to completing this program of Jewish
learning. Now that you have acquired this solid foundation,
I hope that you use it as the building block for a lifetime
of Jewish education and exploration."
Students, Dr. Stephen and Elaine Cohen , had this to say about
their Melton experience "We thought the Melton curriculum
was very encompassing for a two-year program. It was handled
well by all instructors who always encouraged free and open
discussion. The classes were thought provoking and full of
valuable information on history, halakah, current issues,
Israel, ethics and tradition. It was an extremely worthwhile
classroom experience for us."
Director, Peter Price, encouraged by the enthusiasm of this
year's graduates, said "Melton is a great program. The
curriculum, produced at Hebrew University, gives participants'
a thorough background in their heritage. Additionally, its
pluralistic approach is particularly appropriate for our community.
It emphasizes the study of text, but also brings in responsa
from all the different denominations on certain issues, so
students get an understanding of the contributions and philosophies
of each.
"Perhaps the best outcome is that so many of the graduates
are really ignited to continue study, and become life long
learners. Two year's of weekly study might seem like a big
commitment, but I think our graduates will all confirm, that
it was well worth the investment," he concluded.
