Prof. Howard Schwartz Addreses Melton Class of 2009

The Florence Melton Adult Mini-School year in Kansas City culminated with the graduation of 14 students who have successfully completed the two-year course of study.

Scholar-in-residence Howard Schwartz, professor of English at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and widely regarded folklorist, author, poet, and editor of dozens of books, addressed the graduates and their guests attending the event. In his talk, “Gathering the Sparks,” he discussed tikkun olam (commonly referred to as “repairing the world”), kabbalistic interpretations of the story of Creation and the role of the Jewish people in continuing the work begun by God.

During his two-day visit to Kansas City, Prof. Schwartz also led a lively “Feed Your Mind” lunchtime learning session and studied with local rabbis and cantors.

Plans are now under way for the 2009-10 adult-learning class schedule, which will begin in September. “The Melton Mini-School is designed to enable students to improve their Jewish literacy through text study, and to learn in a pluralistic environment that opens the way to understanding multiple points of view,” said Jeff Goldenberg, director of the Department of Adult Jewish Learning at the Jewish Community Center. Classes meet in weekly two-hour sessions throughout the school year (30 weeks). Students register for the two-year the program one year at a time, and may take the two years nonconsecutively.
