October 3, 2003
The school in Ottawa opened on September 15 and, Maxine Miska
Director of Programming of the Soloway Jewish Community Centre
reports that enrollment surpassed the most optimistic expectations.
With an enrollment of 50 students, a second set of classes
had to be opened. There is an evening class to accommodate
people who work, and a class for those who want to study during
the day. The classes are taught by two rabbis in the community.
Rabbi Ely Braun, whose background is orthodox and Rabbi Steven
Garten of Temple Israel, whose background is in reform Judaism.
Both rabbis have masters of education degrees and broad experience
in adult education. The new director is Gerry Cammy.
The Melton classes are held at the Soloway Jewish Community
Centre, a central meeting place for Jews of all religious
orientations, as well as the location for many Jewish agency
meetings, community gatherings, concerts, and other varieties
of Jewish learning.
