Seminar - 10 Days of Inspiration in Jerusalem
How can assumptions
be challenged within a Jewish framework? How can new educational paradigms be
created? How are Jews really Jews in all times and all places? These questions
and more were raised at the Third International Faculty Seminar, held December
31 - January 10. Through
the interaction and confrontation with classical Jewish texts, 14 educators from
the United States and England met at the FMAMS Institute at the Hebrew University
to hone their skills in teaching adults. They studied, discussed, crafted, facilitated,
argued and engaged each other so as to better learn content and method in adult
education. Here's
what some of them had to say about this unforgettable experience: The
tradition has always deemed Mt. Scopus a place for vision. This Melton seminar
has illustrated just how clearly some may see - how powerful a perspective one
gets sitting with scholars and looking out on a city of eternal beauty and eternal
struggle. The collected wisdom of this year's chevre will give me enrichment for
future teaching. Avi West Washington, DC We
often talk about Jewish literacy. But we don't often talk about how the experiences
and lives of adults engaged in Jewish learning create a wonderful synthesis of
Judaism throughout the ages. The Seminar's instructors were the 'crème
de la crème' in Jewish studies and education. I now feel more engaged with
the Melton curriculum and better able to interpret it for students and faculty
alike. David Chack Louisville, KY Too
often Jewish education is only associated with Sunday school. This Seminar shows
that Jewish education is a living, dynamic experience for all adults. David
Pickus Phoenix, AZ The
FMAMS Faculty Seminar was a wonderful opportunity to be in Israel, to experience
learning and teaching with dynamic and committed Melton teachers. Being immersed
in texts, conversation and personal exchanges was enriching and memorable.
Ellyn Hutt Denver, CO The
Faculty Seminar really brought together great educators to discuss all aspects
of the curriculum and teaching. There were many valuable teaching techniques presented
to help us make the entire Mini-School experience meaningful and coherent for
our current students and students for generations to come. Kol Hakavod to the
Melton staff, teachers and expert lecturers. Robert Portnoe St.
Paul, MN The
Seminar was great. The presenters were inspired. The depth and breadth of knowledge
was outstanding. The material conveyed was encompassing. Haim Aronovitz taught
sessions on Hebrew, Jewish and Israeli poetry and led field trips through Mt.
Scopus, Mt. Herzl and the Israel Museum. Other sessions focused on pedagogy, Halachah,
Talmud, curriculum, pluralism, the Bible and much more. Keith Rosen
Houston, Texas Learning
Torah on the top of Mt. Scopus in Jerusalem, with passionate and scholarly teachers,
together with a wonderful, dedicated group of peers was truly a transforming and
inspiring experience that will stay with me always and inform both my teaching
and Jewish living. Arlynn Mirvis Memphis, TN The
Seminar provided me with important insights into how to teach the Melton curriculum
more effectively. It also included excellent classes in Jewish text study, which
served as models for our own Melton classes, as well as professional development
and personal enrichment in Jewish education. Rabbi Dennis Beck-Berman
