The Mordechai Award
It
was a glorious evening for Florence Melton and the
Florence Melton Mini School when several hundred members
of the Kansas City community came out to say "thank-you"
for the impact the Mini-School has had upon life in their
community.
On Sunday March 14, Congregation Beth Israel Abraham and Voliner,
a Modern Orthodox congregation located in Overland Park, Kansas,
hosted their annual Purim Gala dinner. Each year, the congregation
chooses to honor someone who has made a significant impact
upon the Kansas City Jewish Community. This honoree is presented
with the Mordechai Award. In recognition of the invaluable
contribution of the Mini-School to Jewish life and Jewish
leadership in their community, the congregation chose to go
right to the top and award the prime mover of the Mini-School,
Florence Melton herself. Although Florence could not be at
the event itself, an inspiring pre-recorded video interview
with her was presented, with Florence candidly sharing the
history of the founding and development of the Mini-School,
as well her vision for the next arena of Jewish education
which she has committed herself to supporting: teen education.

Rabbi
Morey Schwartz, Curriculum Coordinator for the Florence
Melton Adult Mini-School and former rabbi of the hosting congregation
was in attendance to accept the award on Florence's behalf,
and commend the community and its leadership for their outstanding
support for the local mini-school. In addition, Rabbi Amy
Wallk Katz, the Overland Park Mini-School director, addressed
those assembled on behalf of all of the Mini-School faculty,
past and present, who were also recognized in the course of
the event. She described the paradigm shift which has taken
place over the years in the community vis-a-vis the central
importance of adult Jewish education, and outlined goals yet
to be achieved.
